A letter from Mr. Roshan Khan points out failures to make NIS contributions by many businesses. If true, this situation should not have been permitted to exist, and it requires an immediate response from government by putting teeth into its laws on revenue collection. It is surprising how a situation like this does not raise cries for stronger action by NIS officials and political representatives for steps to prosecute NIS abusers, corrupt inspectors and strengthen inspections. The laws should allow the seizing of assets where feasible, suspension of business licences and other legal remedies. Where is the urgency to protect retirees and reduce the cost to government to provide services that should not have been required to those left homeless or in need? Guyanese deserve an explanation from officials involved and their political representatives. Again, if true this is another outrage of failure to act promptly by some officials.
Failure to comply with NIS laws must not be allowed
