I observed the unanimous passing of the Seeds Bill in the National Assembly, to add to the long list of legislation to further transform and modernize Guyana’s agriculture sector, to take advantage of the numerous opportunities to supply food to the Caribbean and farther afield.
The passage of the Seeds Bill 2011 is an indication of the vision of the Ministry of Agriculture and the government to put regulations in place as they relate to the quality of seeds to enable farmers’ access to quality planting materials , to produce higher yields, and better quality food for local consumption and export.
As I learnt through the media, the Seeds Bill will play a vital role in Guyana’s agriculture sector, to ensure the maintenance of our food security; and it will secure a reliable stock of planting materials during times of disasters, such as the effects of climate change.
As a progressive cash crop farmer with a medium to large-scale operation, I am comforted to know that every effort is being made to ensure Guyana gets a fair chance to compete with other countries to produce food and to take advantage of the global food crisis.
I would like to take this opportunity to commend the government, and particularly the Minister of Agriculture and his team that have shown their commitment time and again, that no effort is being spared to revolutionise the agriculture sector.
Passing of the Seeds Bill will significantly boost agriculture
