Caretaker charged with theft from gutted Linden building

SELWYN Lancaster, 24, was also refused bail by Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday. He is charged, indictably, with having, on May 7, stolen clothing and other booty valued a total of $707,100, property of Zhan Yeh Liang.
Police Corporal Venetta Pindar, prosecuting, said the accused is employed as caretaker for the building in which the virtual complainant operates his business.
The prosecutor said the accused (no address given) admitted stealing the things and took the police to his apartment where he had some.
The court was told another charge is likely to be instituted against the accused, who is a suspect in the recent arson fire at Linden, which gutted the place from where the theft took place.
Attorney-at-law Mr. Gordon Gilhuys, who said the accused had been in custody for more than 72 hours, failed in a bail application and the case was transferred to Christianburg Court, in Linden, for May 17.
