THE driver of motor pick-up GHH 7057, who is alleged to have been involved in the hit and run fatality last Tuesday, is in police custody.
The incident led to the death of 48-year-old pedal cyclist Eldon Smartt, who lived at Lo 51 Robb Street, Bourda. He was on his way to work when he was struck by the vehicle, at Campbell Avenue and Middleton Street, Campbellville, also in Georgetown.
A Police press release said Smartt was proceeding along Middleton Street when he was hit by the motor vehicle, which was proceeding along Campbell Avenue and, allegedly, drove across into the path of the pedal cyclist.
The victim was taken to Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Meanwhile, the driver fled the scene but an eyewitness provided the police with the licence plate number of his vehicle.
Smartt’s aunt, Sandra Bowman, who spoke with the Guyana Chronicle yesterday, said the family is somewhat relieved that the alleged perpetrator of the fatal accident has been detained but disappointed with the pace of the investigations.
Sister, Avril Smartt, said they were informed that the police have detained a suspect and will be carrying out a further probe.
She said the post mortem examination on her brother will be performed on Monday.
