Milerock booted out of CFU Club Championship

-TTDF advance on 7-0 aggregate
GUYANA’s Milerock, one of two sides which contested round action in this year’s Caribbean Football Union’s (CFU) Club championship bowed out of contention in the second round when they lost 3-0 to Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force at the Larry Gomes Stadium in the Twin Island Republic on Friday-night.
By virtue of this victory which followed their 4-0 away win in Guyana last week, the TT Pro League champions advanced comfortably by a 7-0 aggregate score line to move through to the semi-finals of this year’s championship.
This leg of the tournament will be played next month where the top three finishers qualify for the preliminary stage of the 2011-2012 CONCACAF Champions League, with Guyana’s top club Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United being a part of the final four after defeating River Plate last week.
Milerock’s campaign end was accentuated, perhaps, as they were only able to arrive on the Island on the morning of the match which certainly didn’t help their cause, due to flight connection problems.
And from the outset they were never in contention against the national champions of Trinidad and Tobago, who performed exceedingly well in front of a large crowd that included, notably, persons identified with the Army along with the Mayor of Port of Spain Louis Lee Singh.
The Army boys were 1-0 up just after 10 minutes when a Rodwell Elcock header from close range found its way at the back of the net, after accepting a square ball from Kerry Joseph.
Three minutes before half time the hosts doubled their score, this time from a Richard Roy cross which beat Deryck Carter in the ‘Vee’ just from the edge of the penalty area.
Milerock’s challenge proved inadequate, but they tried desperately to improve on their first half performance and this was evident in the first 10 minutes of the second half, unlike the first half.
During this sporadic period, their main hopes rested on former national player Collie ‘Hitman’ Hercules who was unable to narrow the deficit from close up when his shot in the second half went over the cross bar.
But with 10 minutes to go, the eventual winners made it 3-0 through another Roy’s goal which saw him in a clear open one on one with Carter which he easily converted.
Milerock from the bauxite mining town of Linden entered this tournament as the number two club from Guyana, the other being reigning champions Alpha United who have made it through to the final four after beating Puerto Rico’s River Plate when their two matches were played in Guyana last week.
Milerock had reached the second round by virtue of bettering Suriname‘s number two side Inter Moenga Tapoe on away goals difference.
Trinidad and Tobago had mixed fortunes on the night however, when  in the other match played, Haiti’s Tempête FC scored a 1-0 win over the other Trinidad team Caledonia AIA, which is coached by Jamal Shabazz, through a goal which came in the 4th minute off the boot of Junior Charles.
