Kites, caps, and sunglasses take top priority this Easter

IT’S EASTER time again, and kite-flying is the craze. But amidst the fun and excitement of shopping and otherwise preparing for kite-flying and other related activities, smart parents are ensuring they make the ‘Kite, Cap and Sunglasses’ combo the priority on their shopping list.

Kite-flying can be fun, but given the intense heat of the sun being experienced at this time, it is important that the heads and eyes of kite-fliers, particularly children, who would normally spend several hours out in the sun, be adequately protected.

And with Easter Monday just hours away, it is heartening to find that many people are respecting the need for this vital combination. Commercial Georgetown, abuzz with activities, was yesterday literally transformed into a kaleidoscope of colours, as hundreds of Easter lovers – bubbling with energy and excitement, thronged the shopping centres to cash in on Easter offers.

Kites were just about everywhere, but Regent and Cummings Streets, where colourful and attractively designed creations highlighted Guyanese creativity, seemed to be the popular corner. There, kites are being offered at prices ranging from $300 for the smaller ones, to $ 2,500 for two-feet box kites.

Meanwhile, caps and sunglasses in a variety of sizes, designs, name brands and colours are easily and readily available around the streets of Georgetown, but more concentrated on the periphery of Demico House in down-town Georgetown.

Business was brisk, and for those plying their trade in the fashion arena generally, there was never a dull moment. Barber-shops, beauty/hair-dressing salons, boutiques were a hive of activity. Not least were the myriad ‘got-it-all’ and ‘ready-to-serve’ roadside fashion vendors on both shoulders of Regent Street.

Of course, there will be activities for all ages, ranging from the much-talked-about Dobby Dodson and Beres Hammond Shows, in addition to the traditional Easter activities such as Church services, kite-flying, picnics, regatta and rodeo. But whatever your choice of activity or entertainment, there will be a wide range of caps and sunglasses from which you can choose.

As the Sunday Chronicle did our traditional Easter walk-around town yesterday, we were delighted to find that Guyanese are becoming more health-conscious, and that lots more families are beginning to see ‘Kites, caps and sunglasses’ as an incredible and inseparable combination when going kite-flying.
