THE Linden Town Week Committee has planned a grand opening ceremony set for 14:00 hrs on Sunday at the Linden/Georgetown Minibus Park in Central Mackenzie, on Republic Avenue, to celebrate the 41st anniversary of Linden as a town.
This year’s Linden Town Week mirrors a variety of activities, and will be held under the theme ‘Revisiting Our Heritage As We Redefine Our Future’. This should be endearing for both residents and visitors to the town for the week-long celebrations.
Guest Speaker of this year’s Linden Town Week is renowned Lindener, United States-based Dr Gary Stephens. The programme will come to an end with the official declaration of the opening of the Linden Town Week 2011 by Interim Management Committee Chairman Mr. Orrin Gordon.
Prime Minister Sam Hinds, who has become a regular feature at these celebrations, will once again be among those giving greetings on behalf of the government, while others are Leader of the PNC/R Mr. Robert Corbin, Chairman of the Alliance For Change Mr. Raphael Trotman, Regional Chairman Mortimer Mingo, Dr Vincent Adams of the Linden Fund USA, Marvin Burns – President of the Linden Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Ms Valarie Sharpe of the Linden Enterprise Network.
Several overseas-based Guyanese and visitors have already begun arriving for the special celebrations and the programme will be ‘spiced’ with a number of Linden artistes performing on stage. These include the reigning Calypso Monarch ‘De Professor’, Junior Calypso Queen Ms Diana Chapman, along with drama, poem, dances, songs, and drumming.
As usual, there will be the honouring of the top SSEE, CSEC and CAPE performers in the region.
Among those slated to perform at the opening are the One Mile Primary School, St Aidan’s Primary School, Watooka Day Primary School, Linden Foundation secondary School, Mackenzie High School, LICHAS Dance Group, Flame of the Heart Drum Group, Pastor Richard McDonald, Patrick ‘Uncle Bunny’ Braithwaite, Jermaine Figuiera, Alpha Harry, Kadee and Stress Release.
This year’s Linden Town Week (extended) celebrations will run from Sunday 23rd April through to Sunday 8th May with lots of educational, cultural and sporting events planned over the two weeks of activities.
