THE second of the Days of Interaction, programmed for 2011, was held last Sunday in the mining town of Bartica.
This was historic; for in the six years of existence of the Days of Interaction; it was the first for Bartica.
With just about two weeks to organise, the Regional Administration must be complimented for a job well done.
Approximately three hundred athletes and officials from eleven zones including Mazaruni Prisons, Potaro Road (1–5 miles), Batavia/Kartabo, Kartabo/Itaballi, River’s View, Agatash, Bartica North, Bartica East, Bartica Central, Greater Bartica, along with hundreds of spectators and supporters converged on the Bartica Community Centre ground and participated in a number of sports disciplines comprising softball cricket (male and female) – 12 teams, volleyball – 3 teams, football – 6 teams, dominoes – 5 teams and table tennis – 25 participants.
The disciplines were played at a competitive level. The supporters were behind their teams all the way. The atmosphere was electrifying. The weather was fine and the athletes, officials and followers enjoyed all the activities.
The Day of Interaction was graced with the presence of Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Hon. Dr Frank Anthony, who stressed the importance of community participation and involvement, and the organising of sports as a necessary ingredient in the development of individuals and communities in various ways.
Director of Sport Neil Kumar gave a background of the Day of Interaction and Peter Ramotar welcomed all and thanked the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport/National Sports Commission for bringing such an initiative to Region 7. Mr Alfred King, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport was also present.
The day’s activities commenced with female softball cricket. Agatash batting first scored 40 runs without loss. Kartabo in reply made 35 runs for 2 wickets in the allotted overs.
At football 7-A-Side, Bartica Central defeated Potaro Road (1-5 miles) by 2 corners to 1 after a scoreless full time.
Three teams were involved in volleyball. Bartica North edged Bartica Central by 53 points to 52 in the final.
Softball cricket (male) saw River’s View come up against Bartica Central who were victorious by scoring 23 runs for 2 wickets while River’s View scored 16 runs for 4 wickets.
River’s View won the Dominoes Competition by 53 points to 52, scored by Bartica Central. Greater Bartica ended with 33 points.
In table tennis, Kevin Joseph outplayed Lorenzo Jacobs and won in a keenly contested final.
At the grand Opening Ceremony, Mazaruni won the prize for the Best Banner, Kartabo/Itaballi took the prizes for Uniformity and Largest Contingent on parade.
Trophies were presented to the winners and runners-up in the various disciplines by the Dr Frank Anthony and other officials.
Sports gear were also given to clubs for the development of the various sports disciplines in their communities.
