Construction worker dies in highway accident

THE police are investigating a fatal accident which occurred at about 09:10 hrs yesterday at Hauraruni Public Road, Soesdyke/Linden Highway, and which resulted in the death of Floyd Washington, 44, of Fourth Street, Agricola, East Bank Demerara.

Investigations revealed that the driver of motor pickup, GHH 7975, was proceeding along the Highway when the left-side rear wheel blew out, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle which collided with the curb.

As a result, Floyd Washington, Jason Boyce, 27 years of Annandale, ECD,  and Gregory Sue, 40 years, of 74 Costello Housing Scheme, Georgetown, who were in the tray of the vehicle, fell out and received injuries. They were taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where Floyd Washington was pronounced dead on arrival (DOA) while the others were treated and sent away.

Seriously hurt and being stabilized when this newspaper visited the Diamond institution yesterday, was 40-year-old Gregory Sue. He sustained a dislocated left shoulder, injuries to the head, abdomen and left eye, among other things and was writhing in pain as he tried to recollect the incident.

The injured man recalled that the accident happened after the rear left wheel of a pick-up transporting a team of construction workers to the Kuru Kuru Cooperative College blew out, causing the vehicle to crash. The four men being transported by the driver were all doing construction work at the Kuru Kuru College.

The driver is in police custody assisting with the investigations.

Washington is survived by his reputed wife Pamela Persaud, one daughter, two brothers and three sisters.
