GPL contract worker who menacingly demanded $50,000 to fix meter
A CONTRACT worker attached to the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) yesterday appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton to answer a charge of demanding money with menace.
Marcus Watson (no address given) was not required to plead to the indictable charge, which stated that on February 12, with intent to steal, he demanded from Sivabaireen Wazidali $50,000 for himself.
Facts of the charge stated that the accused was a contract worker with GPL in the disconnection and re-connection section. On the day in question, he went to the virtual complainant’s home and demanded $50,000 to do repair works on a meter.
Attorney-at-law Mr. Mohamed Zaffar represented the accused and requested reasonable bail. He said his client is not a flight risk and will return to court for his trial.
Watson was put on $55,000 bail and the matter was transferred to Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court for April 20. (Nathalene DeFreitas)
