Attacks against Sahoye-Shury condemned

Following several attacks on People’s Progressive Party (PPP) Member of Parliament, Mrs. Philomena Sahoye-Shury, two of her supporters/friends came forward to condemn the attacks. The women, Angela Carr and Sandra James, told the Guyana Chronicle on Tuesday that they view the attacks as “spiteful and uncalled for”.
Carr, a mother of four, said that she has known Sahoye-Shury for more than 15 years and the personal attacks were geared to frighten her; but she is indeed a strong-willed individual, who will not be scared by those elements.
The woman added that when she had no one to turn to, Mrs. Sahoye-Shury was there and helped her since she was a single parent.
Carr noted that thanks to the MP, she owns her own house and is doing well with her children.
Meanwhile, James told the Guyana Chronicle that when she had completed her jail term, she was desperate and was assisted by Mrs. Sahoye-Shury who was a truly an inspiration, helping her and her children.
James explained that on Monday person cut Mrs. Sahoye-Shury’s telephone lines, as they did on several other occasions, for reasons unknown, and it is distasteful knowing people are out there to harm her.
Both women, who had a lot to say of the good works of the MP, had similar sentiments in which they asked the culprits to desist from such behaviour.
On January 7 last at around 22:00hrs, an incendiary device was thrown at Sahoye-Shury’s Section ‘K’ Campbellville home.
A release from the PPP said “Mrs. Sahoye-Shury is a member of the PPP’s Central Committee and a leading personality in the PPP/C administration. She is well known for her energetic work in all communities at grass roots level.
“This attack on the home of Mrs. Shury has come at a time when several incidents, including the explosion at Stabroek Market, and attempted arson on schools on the East Coast, have taken place. These may not be unconnected.
“If the action is intended to intimidate Mrs. Shury, we wish to say that it will not succeed.”
The party urged the security forces to intensify their efforts to catch the perpetrators and “prevent the peaceful and tranquil situation in our country from being disrupted.”
