Region Nine residents remember the Jagans

THE month of March has become one of great significance for all Guyanese, as they take time out to reflect on the struggles and achievements of the late President Dr. Cheddi Jagan, who is fondly referred to as the ‘Father of the Nation’, and his wife, Janet Jagan, also a former Head of State. Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, accompanied by Hinterland Coordinator, Harripersaud Nokta, and Chairmen of Regions Five and Nine, Harrinarine Baldeo and Senor Bell, joined residents of Karasabai, Region Nine, in a ceremony to remember the two leaders whose fearless struggles led to the emergence of democracy in Guyana.
The Prime Minister said that regrettably, in some sections of the society, much of what the Jagans fought for to improve the lives of Guyanese is not given the kind of adulation that it deserves.
“Cheddi was for all of the people, he didn’t see race, class, or nationality,” he said.
Nokta said that the transformation that the hinterland has seen over the years was part of Dr. Jagan’s vision, one which the People’s Progressive Party/Civic continues to pursue with vigor.
A wreath-laying ceremony was held at the rehabilitated monument erected in honour of the late Dr. Jagan, while a play park was commissioned in honour of the late Janet Jagan.
Dr. Jagan died on March 6, 1997, while his wife passed away on March 28, 2009. (GINA)
