THERE are a number of little things I want to bring to the attention of the appropriate authorities for them to weigh and consider. Others probably did, too, but it’s not acknowledged, I think. First, the littering in our country in general is a shame.
It’s causing so many problems, especially in the drainage area. But I would like to address the littering of Number 63 beach in particular. As a tourist attraction, it should be cleaned so as to make it attractive at all times, not only for tourists, but for all those who choose to use the beach for one reason or the other.
Also, the main road to the Number 63 beach in Berbice should be completed or at least be made more passable. This will also be beneficial for residents in the area. The beach is nice even though the water is muddy. This should not be left to fail. Beaches are attractions for tourists even though our waters are different.
Secondly, some of the new roads that have been constructed fall apart too quickly. There are claims that substandard work and materials are being used by contractors.
Poor engineering should be taken into consideration. I am not an engineer but I noticed the shoulders (parapets) of the roads are higher than the roads and water is lodged on them, causing them to be damaged quicker. In future, the roads should be made for the water to run off.
Thirdly, the national swimming pool being constructed at Liliendaal is wonderful. Where would the country folks practice? Are there going to be pools built in different locations? My suggestion is that the pools in the managers’ quarters in the sugar estates should be negotiated for use in the meantime. The public should be informed and be involved also.
Last but certainly not least, is the issue of vandalism, a real problem that is not unique to only Guyana. There is a case where drainage pumps are vandalized. Yes, the very pumps that are used for the big floods. Vandals should be hunted down and dealt with severely. The laws need to be stringently applied.
Mr. Editor, I will continue to draw attention to other little things that can make a big, big difference in our society. Let me reiterate, not only vandalism, but other ills should be extirpated in order for morality to grow rapidly.
