CONTROLLED spin bowling from Amit Jaggernauth and Yannick Cariah, Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) were able to record an innings and 45 runs victory over host Guyana at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence in their final round West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Regional four day match yesterday. Scores: T&T 434/5 declared, Guyana 216 and 173
Asked to follow on 10 minutes before lunch yesterday, Guyana reached 5 without loss at the break with Leon Johnson 4 and Rajendra Chandrika 1 still needing 213 runs to avoid an innings defeat, and were bowled out at 17:20hrs, with Cariah picking up 5-46, while Jaggernauth took 5-41 in the home team’s first innings.
Thanks to boundaries from Chandrika and Johnson, Guyana progressed to 42 without loss within the first hour of play after lunch, with Chandrika on 18 and Johnson 22. When play resumed, Johnson drove Imran Khan for four through extra cover, before they posted their second half century partnership of the match from 20.1 overs, before Chandrika was lbw to Imran Khan for 24 from 66 balls with three fours.
Narsingh Deonarine joined Johnson and watched from the other end as the left handed Johnson, who fell for 25 in the first innings, drove Amit Jaggernauth through extra cover for another boundary that pushed Guyana to 54 for 1.
Two years ago, the 27 year old Deonarine became the first batsman to top 1,000 runs in a first class season, including a top score of 198 made against Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC), but he succumbed for a low score of 10 yesterday, caught at mid on by Rayad Emrit off Imran Khan, 15 minutes before tea.
At tea, Guyana were 80 for 2, with Johnson on 43 and skipper Assad Fudadin 1. After the break, the 23 year old Johnson who played three limited overs international matches for the West Indies in 2008, failed to post his eighth first class half century, when he picked out Emrit at mid on in his bid to hit Jaggernauth over that position.
He made 48 off 127 deliveries while batting for 151 minutes, hitting six fours and as Vishal Singh joined Fudadin, Guyana were shakily placed on 97 for 3, before they reached their 100 from 42 overs, with Fudadin on 16 while Singh was yet to score.
Singh helped the Guyanese fight back when he chipped and drove Yannick Cariah through the cover region for four, while Fudadin pulled a short delivery from Imran Khan to the midwicket boundary for four and after the first hour’s play, Guyana were 123 for 3.
T&T claimed the wicket of Fudadin who was caught at the wicket by Ramdin off Cariah for 30, after adding 41 for the fourth wicket with Singh, while Guyana were 138 for 4, with Steven Jacobs, who had a first ball duck in the first innings, joining Singh.
Fudadin faced 102 balls for his 30, batting for 112 minutes and hitting three fours, as T&T applied the pressure to the home team in both bowling and fielding, as they elected not to place any fielder out of the 30 yard area, a testimony of the brittle batting display by Guyana this season.
Singh followed Fudadin, when he was lbw in Cariah’s next over, while the said bowler removed both Derwin Christian (02) and Veerasammy Permaul (00) 15 minutes before the close of play, to leave Guyana stuttering on 145 for 7.
Sensing a victory around the corner, Daren Ganga took the extra 30 minutes given to him and removed Steven Jacobs (04) who was caught by Jason Mohammed at short midwicket off Khan, before Brandon Bess struck Cariah for back to back fours, followed by a six over long on off Imran Khan.
It was all over for Guyana when Amir Khan picked out his namesake Imran Khan at mid on off Cariah, before Bess’ robust innings came to an end when he was caught by Emrit at mid on off Imran Khan, leaving Ronsford Beaton unbeaten on 00, as Guyana suffered an innings and 45 runs defeat.
Earlier in the day, Guyana resumed on 137 for 5, with Chandrika on 77 and Christian 16 and raced to 150 from 60.5 overs, when Christian struck a hat trick of boundaries in successive overs off Cariah, with his first boundary raising the 50 partnership between himself and Chandrika from 94 balls.
Christian took a liking to Cariah, when he pulled him to a wide long on position for four, before he reached his third first class half century with back to back fours to third man off Shannon Gabriel, batting for 96 minutes and hitting eight fours from the 76 deliveries he faced.
T&T reaped success when Christian swept Imran Khan to Cariah who was stationed at backward square leg for 51 made off 80 deliveries with eight fours while batting for 101 minutes adding 96 runs with Chandrika for the sixth wicket.
Chandrika failed to get his maiden first class ton, when he offered Imran Khan catching practice at gully, as he attempted to steer a delivery that was pitched short and wide of the off stump to the vacant third man position.
He made 90 off 227 deliveries and 277 minutes batting with 10 fours, and as Amir Khan strolled to the wicket to join Veerasammy Permaul who was on one, Guyana were 189 for 7, still needing a further 95 runs to avoid the follow on.
The 18 year old Amir Khan who was selected for the West Indies Under-19 team and will be going to Dubai later this year, got off the mark with a cut to third man off Gabriel, before he was caught at silly mid off by Mohammed off Imran Khan for 5.
Permaul fought fire with fire, when he struck Imran Khan over long on for 6, followed by a four to backward square, with the six raising Guyana’s 200 from 78.3 overs, before Jaggernauth removed Bess (01) and Beaton (00) off successive deliveries to wrap up Guyana’s innings for 216, with Permaul unbeaten on 19 (1×6, 1×4).
Jaggernauth ended with 5-41 and Imran Khan 4-66, as Guyana fell 68 runs short of the follow on target of 284, but in the end, Cariah’s second innings haul was enough to give his team a free day today as the Guyanese ended in the cellar position for the third successive year on 16 points.
