A SIGNBOARD erected on a Guyana Power & Light (GPL) pole at Anna Regina, on the Essequibo Coast stating ‘No road, no drinking water in Lima Sands and no light in McNabb – No Vote’ does not represent the views of residents in the two villages, according to community leader, Mrs. Rosealine Thomas. Noting that the wording on the signboard and a picture of the Lima Sands loam and sand road showing some waterlogged spots was published on the front page of Kaieteur News on Monday, the Head of Lima Sands and McNabb Development Group said the entire roadway is not waterlogged.
She said mini-buses and cars are traversing the thoroughfare daily, despite the water pools in few sections.
Thomas said the Kaieteur News reporter took a picture of a bad section of the road which developed potholes during the recent heavy, consistent rainfall.
She said the road, indeed, requires grading and filling but that does not mean the Government is doing nothing as the signpost is alleging.
Thomas said all residents of Lima Sands and McNabb know that Government will build an all weather surface but they have to be patient because development takes time.
She said the Regional Administration grades the loam surface and holes in the road are filled with white sand from time to time.
About electricity, Thomas said the Government has spent hundreds of millions of dollars to set up a network in Lima Sands/McNabb.
She said the villages will have potable water soon because Government has plans to ensure that the needs of all residents are met.
A resident of McNabb, Ms. Sharda Persaud also took offence to the Kaieteur News publication, attesting that Government is investing in her community and she is confident they will get an all weather road.
“We have got electricity already. So, wait a little more, we will get the road,” she said, confidently.
Persaud said the roadway should be graded often because the rainfall makes it bad.
Another McNabb resident, Mr. Henry Mangroo said: “I am thankful to the Government for electricity. Never mind the road is not paved as yet.”
He agreed the Regional Administration should grade the road more often and make it better for vehicles to drive on.
“I know the Government is doing a good job and there is progress in McNabb,” said Mangroo. He added: “I have seen development.”
