Accused led police to recover $13.4M booty
ACTING Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, also on police objection, yesterday refused pre-trial liberty to labourer Mark Barry, who is charged with committing a $13.4M burglary.
The indictable charge against Barry (no address given) said, last March 6, he broke and entered the dwelling house of Hamilton Xavier Almuia and stole 36 ½ ounces of raw gold valued $12M and $1.4M cash.
Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, said the accused worked with the virtual complainant who secured his home and went out.
However, upon returning, Almuia observed a window open and discovered the money and mineral missing.
The prosecutor said during the investigations, the accused was taking the police to a location where he left the booty when he escaped but was re-arrested.
On the ground that Barry is a flight risk, the magistrate remanded him to prison until April 20.
