… Alpha United in action
THE final two first-round matches of this year’s Invitational Mayor’s Cup football tournament will be staged at the GFC ground this evening when City teams Alpha United and Sunburst Camptown FC tackle BV Triumph United and Bakewell Buxton United respectively.
The star-studded Alpha lineup should have no problem in getting past the BV side whose main weapons include Colin Jones, Nickel Fraser, Kelvin Williams, Ronnel Gordon and goalkeeper Malcolm Wilson.
National midfield/forward Dwight Peters and Dwain Jacobs will be more than a handful for the BV defence and with support in the middle from Sean Bishop and Philbert Moffatt it could be a long night for the East Coast team.
Alpha’s defence will be expertly marshalled by national captain Howard Lowe and footballer-of-the-year 2010, Ronson Williams, within the uprights.
The Camptown/Buxton affair which will be played first at 18:00 h should provide another real test for the East Coast-based team, coached by Sherry Abrams. The Campbellville-based side will be spearheaded by national forward Nigel ‘Powers’ Codrington who, in tandem with Lance Rawlston, could serve up the necessary goals.
The midfield will be directed by the seasoned Troy Prescod along with the youthful Jahall Greaves while the experienced Orlando Gilgeous will organise the defence.
Buxton’s captain Jolyn Fraser and Sherwin Griffith in midfield will spearhead the challenge with Alistair Dean in attack. The defence will depend a lot on Owen Bobb and custodian Brian Robinson to stop the Camptown raids.
The quarter-finals of the 16-team KO Tournament will kick-off tomorrow at the GFC ground when the GDF meet Fruta Conquerors at 18:00 h with Pele FC tackling Riddim Squad afterwards.
