THE volume of rainfall, according to statistics from the Ministry of Agriculture, has surpassed the 2005 levels by some 45 percent, but efforts are continuing to ensure that there is no repeat of the 2005 disaster.
Agriculture Minister Robert Persaud contends that, despite this, Guyana’s drainage and irrigation capacity has significantly improved from 2005 to now – as evidenced by the fact that the weather conditions experienced to date are much worse than in 2005, yet there has not been any ‘catastrophic’ flood situations in the country.
Minister Persaud maintained that Government’s investment in drainage and irrigation has paid off.
Guyana’s drainage and irrigation capacity caters for 1.5 inches of rainfall, but the country is currently seeing as much as 8 inches of rainfall caused by the La Nina phenomenon.
Current rainfall surpasses 2005 levels by 45%
