‘Dumb Boy’ Jackson takes second Cheddi Jagan Memorial race

FLYING Stars Cycle Club’s (FSCC) Ian ‘Dumb Boy’ Jackson made a surprise move on his competitors to take the third annual Cheddi Jagan Memorial 50 mile cycle road race organized by national cycling coach Hassan Mohammed and sponsored by Fazil Ramzan on behalf of the PPP/ Goed Fortuin group yesterday. Having won the Veteran’s category in the first of three races held last week in Berbice, Jackson took the second race in a time of 1h: 58: 47s, from Alonso Greaves, Robin Persaud, Warren Mc Kay, Mark Lewis and last week’s Open category winner Junior Niles respectively.
Riding out of Roraima Bikers Club (RBC), Mc Kay and his club captain Darren Allen made a move to the front of the peloton which included Greaves, Persaud, Lewis, Niles, Albert Philander, Enzo Matthews, Raymond Newton and the vast improving Raynauth Jeffrey, as they approached the village of Catherina on the upward journey.
The duo worked in tandem at the front, with Mc Kay picking up five of the eight prime prizes up for grabs, (Greaves, Newton and Talim Shaw sharing the other three), right up to the turn back point at Bushy Park, East Bank Essequibo.
They held a 40 seconds lead over the peloton, who were led in their chase by the hard working 2010 Person with Disability (PWD) awardee Walter Grant-Stuart and they managed to connect at Windsor Forest, just in front of the Crematorium Site.
The slogan ‘All for one and one for all’ could have been applied to the peloton who stayed together, until they approached the Aracari Resort, where Jackson made an unchallenged move to the front to win by some 300 metres away from Greaves and company.
In the Veteran category, Kennard Lovell edged out Toran Harris and Shameer Baksh to take that category, while Jude Bentley took the Upright category from Kester Croal and Andre Petty respectively, with Naomi Singh taking the female category and Walter Isaacs the Veteran Over-60 category from Monty Parris.
The cyclists will turn their attention to the final race of this year’s trilogy, which takes place in the Cinderella County of Essequibo on Sunday 27th March from Supernaam to Charity and back to Suddie for the finish.
