Amelia’s Ward United cart off $200 000 top prize as UDFA League concludes

AMELIA’S Ward United, under new coach Patrick Dey, emerged as the new senior club champions in Linden when they finished atop of the points table in the just-concluded Upper Demerara Football Association’s Open League tournament which was contested by ten clubs.
Amelia’s Ward United with 18 points claimed their first championship in almost two decades and carted off the first prize of $200 000, while second position was taken by Winners Connection who were on 17 points from five wins, two draws and two losses and a goal difference of 10.
They  will receive $100 000. Milerock finished on 17 points also and a similar win/loss/draw record like Winners Connection but with an inferior goal difference of 6, to be third  and they will collect $50 000.
The other clubs which finished in fourth, fifth and sixth positions will join the top three in the First Division while the others will be ranked as second division clubs.
The three other finishers in the top six positions to qualify as first division clubs are Bakewell Topp XX, Net Rockers and Silver Shattas while Vasco, Peacemakers of Ituni, Blueberry Hill United and Eagles United completed the second division clubs.
There will be a prize-giving ceremony at the Linden Foundation Secondary School, which is home to Amelia’s Ward United FC, tomorrow at 16:30 h in the school’s auditorium. The club will also be presented with a five-year sponsorship kit from TLC shipping, a Linden-owned shipping agency, which operates out of New York.
This 2010/2011 Open League championship was sponsored by the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC), Mr Wayne Ebba, Mr Mark Grimmond, Mr Shawn Hopkinson, Mr Bonnie Davis, Chief Executive Officer of the Linmine Secretariat Mr Horace James, National Communications Network (NCN) Linden Manager Mr Andrew McBean and the Linden Hospital Complex’s Chief Executive Officer Mr Gordon Gumbs.
