Garbage dump odour raises concerns at Lima

RESIDENTS along Lima Sideline Dam and devotees of a mandir on Essequibo Coast are complaining about an offensive odour emanating from a garbage dump operated by Anna Regina Town Council. The complainants said the situation becomes unbearable whenever the wind blows from a certain direction.
The municipality dug large pits and started dumping waste that was burnt, regularly, in the dry season but the recent heavy rainfall has caused overflowing into nearby drainage trenches, contaminating water used for washing or bathing.
One resident, Moonilal said workers are now discarding waste on the dam, itself and other people are putting animal carcasses in the pits, adding to the foul smell in the community.
Worshippers said they are also affected during their services and they are demanding urgent action from the Public Health Department.
