A MOTHER appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday, charged with neglecting her children.
Jeheira Duke (no address given) pleaded not guilty to having neglected the two siblings on February 25.
Police Corporal Venetta Pindar, prosecuting, said the prosecution resulted from a report that the children were left alone at home and it was verified by a probation officer who visited the house. The prosecutor said further checks by the same officer found the defendant in a nearby rum shop consuming alcohol.
Duke told the court she is experiencing problems with her reputed husband but she did not leave the children by themselves, as they were with five adults.
The magistrate released the defendant on her own recognisance but ordered that she report to Alberttown Police Station, in Georgetown, on Mondays and Fridays until March 7.
Meantime, the case was transferred to another court for that date.
