ACCUSED confidence trickster Pulmattie Ramjatan, 42, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday, on a fraud charge.
The defendant, of Lot 1015 Canje Field Housing Scheme, in Berbice, pleaded not guilty to having, on February 14, with intent to defraud, obtained $40,000 from Tameshwar Rahaman, by falsely pretending that she was in a position to pay the sum for groceries purchased, knowing it to be false.
Police Sergeant Lionel Harvey, prosecuting, objected to bail and informed the Court that the woman is likely to face other similar charges and, if she secures bail, may not return for trial.
But defence counsel Gregory Gaskin said Ramjatan is a housewife and was at her home when the police arrested her.
He maintained that there is no basis for stating that she may not return to court and said it is unnecessary to deny her pre-trial liberty when the police plan to arrest her, again, for another offence.
Gaskin admitted that she is expected to appear before another magistrate on March 1 and the prosecutor’s objection was overruled and surety set at $50,000 until March 2.
