After Mash parade…

U.S. volunteers helping in Georgetown clean-up exercise
THE frenzy of the Mashramani 2011 Float Parade being over, a different kind of urgency took centre stage yesterday, as the mammoth task began, to restore Wednesday’s tramping ground in Georgetown, to its former state.

In the wake of the revelry, several clean-ups, undertaken by the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) and several non-governmental organisations (NGOs), got underway.
A City Hall press release said the Municipality has a definite plan for the after Republic celebrations exercise, and equipment, tools and men have been mobilised by the Solid Waste Management Department, to clear all areas used for the parade and other activities.
The release said the job is anticipated to cost at least $300,000.
It said the groups which are helping, would significantly reduce the expenditure, and simultaneously give those involved an opportunity to make a direct contribution to the health of the environment.
Those from various entities involved include members of staff of the National Communications Network (NCN) and the Special Task Force (STF) comprising young volunteers from the United States (U.S.).
STF Leader, Ms. Eunhwa Mouada said it’s contingent comprises individuals who, collectively, took a year off from their jobs and studies to volunteer in several countries around the world.
She said they witnessed the Mashramani celebrations on Wednesday and realised it is a great opportunity to participate in the clean-up, which fits in with their overall mission.
