THE second annual Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T), in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport (MCYS), Guyana Softball League (GSL) nationwide 10/10 softball competition, bowls off this morning at the Everest Cricket Club ground from 09:00 h, with a record 1 224 teams registering to compete. Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr Frank Anthony will deliver the first ball to GT&T’S Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Yog Mahadeo, after which the battle for supremacy will begin among the teams.
Of the teams that register to compete in this year’s tournament, 1 015 are males, doubling the entries for last year’s inaugural tournament, and they will be doing battle for the $2M first prize with trophy, while 209 female teams will, for the first time, battle for a $1M first prize.
The competition, which will continue at various venues across the country on weekends, will culminate with the grand final at the Guyana National Stadium on April 10, with a Caribbean-style entertainment package – including music from overseas along with local bands and artistes, adding a festive atmosphere to the event.
The sponsors would like to encourage the public to come out and support the games at the venues listed in the fixtures published in the Wednesday and Friday editions of the Stabroek News.
GT&T along with the co-sponsors, including Banks DIH (Coca Cola, Vitamalt and Tropical Mist), Impressions, Auto Fashion, Cell Phone Shack, Buddy’s Night Club and Kings Jewellery World, will be giving away several prizes during the preliminaries to teams and spectators and these will become more attractive as the competition progresses, ultimately making everyone a winner.
The venues for matches will be branded by GT&T and co-sponsors and entertainment will be a sober party-style affair with several promotions and free giveaways throughout the games, while 10/10 merchandise, including jerseys, will be on sale at several prominent venues.
Updates on the tournament can be seen on GT&T’s ‘We Linkin’ television programme aired on NCN Channel 11 every Monday at 21:00 h or alternatively on the weekly 10/10 Round Up to be aired on NCN every Thursday at a time to be announced.
The organisers are urging the public to “Come leh we have a ball, with we bat and ball, let’s jump and celebrate, we believe in happiness, throw your flags up in the air, cause we really must be here, participating, it’s 10/10 we playin,” starting with today’s matches,
