… says the best in the Region
THE man who has put together the Schools’ Football Academy project for Guyana and who will be the Technical Director, Guyanese-born Stanley Harmon boastfully proclaimed to the Media at the launch last Monday that the programme is the best in the Region. The ‘B’ level licensed coach of the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) in his vote of thanks said, “After hearing all the positive compliments we are on the road to the best football programme in the Caribbean and we are committed to making this a success and moving it to the next level where we’ll have all the schools in Guyana participating.
“I know this will be a big task, but I am heartened by the level of professionalism I have seen over the last week I have been here.”
Harmon, who is also an Instructor of the National Soccer Coaches Association of the USA, added that he had written the project proposal some three years ago and was happy to conduct and complete his first Course in his homeland.
Coach Harmon also told Chronicle Sport that he has never coached in Guyana and that he has been attached to the Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn for some 20 years now.
Last week he presented a 3-day course for 22 school teachers who will be involved with the Pilot programme and stated it was no different from courses he has done in the past, “fairly good and typical of what we get in the U.S. It was probably a bit too long. I must say I was impressed with the level of cooperation to make this happen”
Harmon, who has been coaching football in New York since 1978, is also the NY Regional Rep for the National Black Soccer Coaches Association and thinks it is time to give some of his wealth of knowledge and experience to the country of his birth.
“After giving so many years of Coaching to America I think it is only fitting that I return and share what I have acquired in the development of football in Guyana.”
Coach Harmon’s advice to all coaches is: “Remember the development of players is your main task. Coaches must develop a philosophy and live by their philosophy whether it is to win or graduate. I coach to graduate my players.”
