Lawyer claims malicious damage defendant is victim

DEXTER Stewart, 39, of Lot 189 Prospect, East Bank Demerara, pleaded not guilty, on Tuesday, when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, charged with malicious damage and using threatening language. It was alleged that, on Monday, January 24, he maliciously damaged 10 concrete blocks valued $10,000 and threatened the   mother of his child, Desiree Williams.
Police Corporal Venetta Pindar, prosecuting, had objected to bail, stating that the defendant has another case pending   elsewhere.
The Prosecutor said, in relation to a December 24, 2010, conviction, the ship engineer was placed on a bond that he has   broken.
Williams told the Court Stewart threatened her with a gun.
But Defence Counsel George Thomas said the concrete blocks belong to the defendant and not Williams and Stewart has the   receipt to show ownership.
The lawyer also said Williams stole an instrument the defendant uses to carry out his duties at sea and the latter is   really the victim in the case.
Stewart was ordered to post $10,000 surety until March 31.
