Pollard’s strike ends W Connection title hopes

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) – Guyanese international Charles Pollard scored the lone goal as North East ended the title hopes of former champions W Connection with a 1-0 win when the Trinidad and Tobago Pro League continued here Tuesday night. Playing at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Pollard found the back of the nets in the 78th minute as Stars improved to 28 points, the same as San Juan Jabloteh and Ma Pau with two matches left to play.
The 37-year-old has been in excellent form recently, netting a double in a semi-final T&T Football Federation FA Trophy win over Defence Force last week.
Meanwhile, Defence Force continued their march towards their 21st league title after a 2-0 shutout of Caledonia AIA in their top-of-the-table encounter at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.
After the first half finished nil-all, Defence Force were given the lead by Jemel Seabro in the 56th minute before national striker Devorn Jorsling struck in the 77th minute with his league-leading 15th goal of the season.
The win carried Defence Force to 37 points, six more than defending champions Joe Public and with a healthy goal-difference of 22 to their rivals six.
Joe Public kept the title race alive for at least one more round when they secured a 2-1 win over St Ann’s Rangers at the Marvin Lee Stadium, to leapfrog Caledonia AIA (30).
