Essequibo Coast public transport drivers, Police reach agreement

After discussing issues…
SCORES of hire car and minibus drivers, plying the Anna Regina to Suddie route, met with top Police and Regional officials, in the
boardroom of the Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam) Regional Democratic Council (RDC), on the Essequibo Coast yesterday.
Their discussions were on issues, including speeding, overtaking, the Suddie Car Park and animals roaming the public road.
Commander of Police ‘G’ Division, Superintendent Brian Joseph said he is concerned about speeding on the thoroughfare and
warned that the offence will be dealt with very sternly.
Responding to complaints, by the drivers, about traffic ranks harassing them when taking in passengers on the Suddie
Hospital access road and old car park area, he said the new car park, near Suddie Post Office, must be used and they will not be
allowed to solicit commuters at the other locations.
The complainants said they are being taken to the Suddie Station if they stop around the old car park to collect people but
Joseph said the drivers are ‘spinning’ around that parking place to get passengers while other drivers have to wait at the designated
park.
Some drivers agreed with him and asked permission to take in passengers at the old car park while proceeding from the new
without interference from traffic cops and it was granted, on condition that they obey the rules and regulations governing the new
Suddie park.
Regional Chairman, Mr. Alli Baksh, who was also in attendance, said it is important for the drivers, Police and the Regional
Administration to meet, so that problems affecting the transportation sector on the Essequibo Coast can be ironed out in the Region.
Others attending included Deputy Police Commander Adrian Simon and Member of Parliament (MP), Mr. Parmanand Persaud.
