Minibus operators should smell the coffee

THE recent move by government to provide transportation for stranded commuters was most welcomed and, I believe, has far-reaching consequences for mini bus operators. This decision sends a clear and concise message to these operators, that no longer will commuters be exploited, have their safety put at risk and endure despicable customer service for a product for which they are paying.

Commuters can no longer be held to ransom on the whims and fancies of mini bus operators who routinely withdraw their services to impose unreasonable fare increases, and now have done so merely because they are unhappy with their holding area at the Stabroek Bus Park.

The next time the thought of strike action enters their minds, the knowledge that government stands ready to move in and provide this critical service for members of the public will help them to act with caution and foresight.

In fact, government should seriously consider providing this service, at a fee, on a permanent basis. Commuters will finally benefit from a safe, reliable and affordable means of transportation instead of subjecting themselves to the speeding death traps that mini buses have come to represent.
Minibus operators, it’s time to shape up or be put out of business.
