TWO men were refused bail yesterday, when they appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, on a robbery charge.
Asif Mohammed, of Lot 196 Campbellville and Marvin Liverpool, of ‘B’ Field Sophia, pleaded not guilty to the offence, particulars of which said, on January 10, being in the company of another, they robbed Jamal Versammy of a gold chain, valued $50,000 and a gold and diamond ring, priced at $80,000, booty worth a total of $280,000. It was also alleged that, on the same day, Mohammed, while in lawful custody at Kitty Police Station, pending a criminal charge, escaped.
He pleaded not guilty to that crime, as well.
Police Sergeant Lionel Harvey, prosecuting, said the victim was attacked when he emerged from a discotheque, raised an alarm and the defendants were arrested by ranks in a passing mobile patrol.
The Prosecutor said Mohammed and another man, Terry Morgan, fled from Police detention but the former was recaptured and an arrest warrant has been issued for the latter.
Mohammed complained that he was beaten by the Police and Liverpool claimed he went to the station to make a report and, because he spoke about the beating of Mohammed, he was detained, too.
He said he suffered blows that rendered him unconscious and regained consciousness in handcuffs.
The case was transferred to another Court for January 17.
