Is something sinister afoot?

OVER the last several days a series of seemingly random events have occurred; the explosion at Stabroek Market square, the bombing of a PPP/C Member of Parliament’s home, and a fire on Main Street, apparently as a result of arson. Taken in isolation, any one of these events could have been seen as a one-off act, orchestrated by the criminal minded. However, this is Guyana and we are into an elections year. When the history of what obtains during elections is taken into account as it relates to politically motivated violence, we can easily begin to see a pattern.

I therefore call on the Guyana Police Force to be particularly vigilant and thorough in its investigations of these recent events.

We must also support the government when hard decisions need to be taken such as the Stabroek square clean-up. This is meant to safeguard the security of every citizen and must be seen as such.

If the recent events have what has been described as intellectual authors, then they must be brought to justice immediately. If they are threats to the State they should be charged with treason.

As Guyanese, we would all like to see the 2011 national elections unfold and conclude peacefully as was the case in 2006.
