THE new year has arrived and I would like to take the opportunity to wish all Guyana a happy and prosperous 2011. However, we can’t forget certain events that we closed last year with, especially, when it comes to GuySuCo.
GuySuCo was forced to close prematurely last year after being bamboozled by workers in the industry.
Someone is responsible. If not someone, then it has to be some force that would have influenced the actions of the workers.

Workers just did not turn up to work causing lots of shortfall in the Industry. In my opinion, it was the Union (GAWU) that used its strong networks to send messages to workers to relax for the holiday hence dropping the production on the estates.

Before premature closure of some estates, I was told that everything was prepared on the ground for canes to be harvested but then and there, there were little or no workers to remove the canes from the fields. I ask myself, where is the effort, the national effort, that all of us have to put so that we can keep our industry alive and for it to prosper?

As the new year begins and as the new crop will commence shortly, I want to urge my fellow colleagues in the Industry that we all need to aim for betterment and avoid getting detuned by external forces which seem to think otherwise.
I hope for a productive and prosperous new year and more so, may the sugar industry shine out this year and may we put all negatives behind us and strive for higher production.
