Duo fined $80,000 for setting off firecracker on UG campus

Police reported yesterday that Mark Hoosein, 22, of Fourth Street, Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara, and Rhomayne Li, 18, of Cummings Street, Alberttown, Georgetown, were yesterday charged with unlawful possession of explosives and throwing explosives in a public place.

They appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchmansingh at the Sparendaam Magistrate Court where they pleaded guilty and were each fined $30,000 on the charge of unlawful possession of explosives and $10,000 on the other charge.

The charges follow investigations into an incident that occurred at about 13:30hrs on Thursday at the University of Guyana, Turkeyen Campus, where the two students exploded a fire cracker causing fear and panic among persons and disrupting classes. Another fire cracker was found by the police after a search of a motor vehicle in which they were travelling.
