Mohabir had begun working at the New Amsterdam Hospital Tuesday…
Julian Mohabir, who was killed following a motor vehicle collision just off the northern side of the Canje Bridge on Tuesday night, had commenced working at the New Amsterdam Hospital earlier that day, just to return as a corpse hours later.
Regional Executive Officer [ag], Shelton Daniels, under whose supervision Mohabir worked whilst being employed by the Regional Administration as an office assistant, was overwhelmed with grief on hearing of the tragedy.
At the New Amsterdam Hospital Tuesday night, he said it was on Monday that Mohabir , having worked at the Region Administrative block, was transferred to the health institution.
‘This is shocking. A young man’s life just snuffed out’, he uttered after viewing the body in the morgue.
Meanwhile , the police in a statement, said Mohabir, 23, was among four other persons in motor car PHH 6528 driven by Dwayne Joseph, 25, of Tucber Park, New Amsterdam, and was crossing the Canje Bridge when he overtook another vehicle and was faced by a car coming from the opposite direction.
He swerved to avoid the oncoming car and slammed into a utility pole.
All five occupants received injuries and were taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital where Julian Mohabir was pronounced dead on arrival. Dwayne Joseph, along with Nigel Henry, 34, of Asylum Street, New Amsterdam; Vincent Vandenburg, 25, of Coburg Street, New Amsterdam; and Renaldo Artiga, 21, of Sheet Anchor, have been admitted patients at the New Amsterdam Hospital.
Jasmattie Mohabir ,called Bridget, mother of the deceased, recalled leaving her son at home shortly after 20:00hrs.
Minutes later she received a telephone call saying there was an accident at the Canje Bridge, a stone’s throw from where the family lived.
At the bridge she saw a blow-torch and a cutter being used to rip the right side doors and the roof, to pull the youths from the wrecked vehicle.
“The process took a long time .Persons were making more noise than helping,” she recounted.
“My son was the last person to be removed .I did not see him properly then, as it was crowded. However on arrival at the New Amsterdam Hospital, I sensed something was wrong, but no one was telling me. I later learnt that he had died. I believed if he was removed earlier he might have lived. He bled a lot.”
Describing the third of her five children, the woman said he was fun to be with.
“He just love to kiss you so much,” she said.
Even as the injured persons were taken to the hospital about 100 meters away, traffic along the overpass was prevented from flowing, as vehicles lined both sides of the bridge. Ranks from the New Amsterdam Police Station were also at the scene rendering assistance.
At the New Amsterdam Hospital, hundreds gathered and there were loud wails when they heard about Mohabir’s death as he was well liked in the community.
Henry and Artiga suffered minor injuries and were released from the hospital, while Vandenburg and Joseph were transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Hospital sources revealed Joseph suffered a compound fracture with dislocation to the right elbow, while Vandenburg sustained a fractured right femur along with soft tissue injury to the right knee.
Mohabir, whose overseas based father, Emanuel, is yet to be told of the news, is survived by his parents and siblings Marissa, Juian, Ryan and Adrian, and numerous relatives and friends.
A post mortem is to be conducted on his body today.
