Christmas Day wounding defendant granted bail despite objection

ACTING Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday granted  Deon Braithwaite $25,000 bail on an unlawful wounding charge.
The defendant, of Lot 6 D’Urban Street, Wortmanville, Georgetown, pleaded not guilty to having, on December 25, unlawfully and maliciously wounded George Barnwell.
Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, said Barnwell saw Braithwaite climbing over the wall that separates their apartments, carrying two knives, with which he inflicted the injuries.
The Prosecutor objected to pre-trial freedom for Braithwaite, on the ground  that the two men had previously unsettled issues and may have more confrontations if the defendant is free.
But the objection was overruled after Defence Counsel Vic Puran explained that Braithwaite is the owner of the house from which Barnwell refuses to remove.
The case will be called, again, on January 4.
