NBTS reports….
COORDINATOR of the National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS), Ms. Shameeza Mangal, said last Christmas weekend was a tough one, particularly so because the SOS appeal for donors was largely unheeded. “We collected about 32 units over the weekend and only about three were from persons responding to the call. The rest were donors we called back,” she reported.
Mangal said NBTS staffers worked through the holidays to secure the blood that was needed but, at this time of year, the inflow of voluntary donors, usually, slows.
However, she emphasised that the need still exists and persons should give the gift of life.
“We do not have any blood drives at this time because organisations are busy. So they are not willing to commit to a drive. We need the voluntary donors,” Mangal reiterated.
Voluntary givers are welcome at all five sites nationwide, NBTS headquarters in Georgetown, West Demerara Regional, New Amsterdam, Suddie and Linden hospitals.
Persons requiring further information about donating can telephone number 227-0418.
