– during Boxing Day celebration
POLICE are hunting a suspect who reportedly stabbed his relative to death following a misunderstanding at Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara on Sunday night. Dead is Ravindra Sookhoo, 24, of Lot 154 Belle Vue, West Bank Demerara, who succumbed to a stab wound at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
Police reported that at about 19:00 hrs on Sunday (Boxing Day), at Diamond Housing Scheme, Sookhoo and another man were imbibing alcohol during which an argument developed between them and he was allegedly stabbed to his body. He was taken to the GPHC where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Up to press time last night, the suspect had not yet been arrested.
Sookhoo’s wife, Savitri Singh, 21, holding her two sons, told the Guyana Chronicle yesterday that at about 14:00 hrs on Sunday she and her husband had gone to her mother’s house at Diamond to spend the afternoon with her family and it was about 19:30 hrs when they were preparing to leave for home when an argument began between her husband and her brother-in-law.
Singh said she was in the process of putting on one of her son’s sandals when her husband came up and asked her to “hurry up” and they had an exchange of words.
It was then her husband dealt her a slap to the face and her brother-in-law intervened on her behalf and a scuffle ensued.
Singh said, “After he slapped me, my brother-in-law asked him why he did that and he answered him and asked if he wanted to do something about it and they started to fight and I took my children in the verandah and next thing I know my husband is clutching his stomach bleeding.”
The grieving woman added that the fight was ‘parted’ by another relative and, when she got in the house, she noticed her husband bleeding from a wound to the stomach and he collapsed and was conveyed to the Hospital where he died.
At the time, several relatives including Singh’s parents and siblings were at home when the incident occurred.
Singh said her husband worked as a carpenter and was imbibing with relatives in celebration of Boxing Day.
