The PPP notes the strengthening of human rights in Guyana
– The world observed International Human Rights Day on December 10, 2010
This event is a time for reflection on the conditions of human beings the world over. On this occasion, the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) extends best wishes to peoples everywhere who are working to advance the cause of human freedom and rights.
We are observing this important event at a time when the world is grappling with one of the most serious economic crises since the Great Depression. Millions of people living in both the developed and developing countries have been losing their jobs and other means of livelihood.
In many countries of the world, people are still suffering grave human degradation due to devastating natural disasters and poverty. People living in the midst of the situations in Haiti and Indonesia are the most affected. After almost one year since it was struck by a devastating earthquake, the people of Haiti are still living in camps.
The progressive and democratic forces throughout the world must not be indifferent to the suffering and grave injustices that the people of Palestine have to confront on a daily basis. It is indeed deplorable that, even at this time, Palestinian lands are being confiscated and built on by the Israeli regime.
Unfortunately, the U.S., which has the greatest possibility of halting this injustice, has now taken a position to stand back and allow this continuous violation to continue unchecked.
The PPP condemns these violations that are taking place everywhere. We call for an end to the killings of journalists and trade unionists, particularly in Colombia.
Apart from the continuous violations being inflicted on people in some parts of the world, we must also celebrate successes. We welcome the release of Aung San Suu Kyi of Myanmar, who was recently released after being under house arrest for over 14 years. Although violations continue to take place, Suu Kyi’s release is an inspiration and gives hope for more world peace.
The PPP wishes to note the strengthening of human rights in Guyana and urges all to unite to defend and continue to promote human rights in our country.
