THE Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) yesterday called up 18 players to begin preparation for their second outing at the USA Sevens World Series, set for Las Vegas, where several of the world’s top playing rugby nations will gather from February 12 to 13. Guyana made their debut on the ‘Vegas Rugby strip’ last year and being placed in the so-called ‘group of death’ with Australia, New Zealand and France, the local ruggers failed to clinch a win but pulled off one of the tournament’s biggest upset by drawing 12-12 with the French.
It was said that changes will be made as the five-time Caribbean Sevens champions seek to claim their place outside of the region among the world’s seasoned campaigners in the shortest format of the game.
Theodore Henry, a regular fixture on the Guyana and West Indies Sevens team was announced as the coach of the team according to Chairman of the selectors Mike Mc Cormack.
The players listed will assemble from Monday at the National Park Rugby field at 17:00 h
Those called are: Claudius Butts, Walter George, Ryan Gonzales, Leon Greaves, Cyon Kitt, Joseph Rahaman, Elwin Chase Avery Corbin, Peabo Hamilton, Dane Parks, Jason Tyrell, Chris Singh, Troy Bascom, Claude Alexander, Vallon Adams, O’Neil Charles, Jermaine Prowell and Kevin Jordan.
