THE body of Mr. Winston Murray, M.P., CCH, and former Chairman and aspiring Presidential candidate for the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) party, was yesterday laid to rest at his homestead, Leguan, Essequibo Islands. Mr. Murray’s interment followed a moving and extended programme of tributes in his honour at the St. Peter’s Church, Leguan during which relatives and other villagers residing in that part of the Region were afforded the opportunity to join in the proceedings and to say a fond farewell. He was buried in the St. Peter’s Anglican cemetery.
Tributes were given by representatives of predominantly PNCR colleagues and representatives or the ten administrative regions.
Key PNCR functionaries delivering tributes were Chairman, Mr. Cammie Ramsaroop and Dr. Richard Van West Charles. Other leading personalities included Imam Amjad Shaw; Mr. Kalian Persaud Sharma and PNCR stalwarts – Ms. Cheryl Sampson of the National Congress of Women; Kirk Saul, formerly of the Young Socialist movement (Youth arm of the PNCR) and Christopher Jones of the Guyana Youth and Student Movement.
Meanwhile, giving tributes on behalf the Ten regions were: Region One – Desmond Fernandes M.P.; Region Two – Joe hill; Region Three –John Adams and Mark Walkes; Region Six – Kerwin Crawford; Region Seven – Judith Blair nee’ David; Region Eight – Gloria Bancroft; Region Nine – William Tony and a representative of Region Ten.
And in a demonstration and acknowledgement of ‘peace’ which characterised the life of the late Winston Murray, and the same attribute he would wish to pervade the Guyanese society, representatives of the YSM, in a somber manner, performed the symbolic ‘Release of Doves’.
Then came the lusty singing of the hymn “How great thou Art’ as the earthly remains of Winston Murray, born January 31, 1941 and who died on November 22nd 2010, following a full life of dedicated service to the nation, were finally committed to the ground.
