‘Starr’ launches low-cost computers

IN an effort to bring computers to every home in Guyana, Starr Computers Tuesday launched its fully loaded ‘Xfinity Lite’ (Student Edition) system which is available at a cost of $69,000.
The system comes with a high process speed of 2.7 GHz, a large storage capacity of 320 GB and a ‘DVDR-W writer’ which makes it possible to playback and reproduce music, movies and data.

When bundled with Guyana Telephone and Telegraph (GT&T) ‘e-magine’ broadband Internet, “you can now bring the world to your fingertips,” President of Starr Computers Michael Mohan said  at the store, Brickdam, Georgetown.
The system allows for easy navigation across Google, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Hotmail and other social and business communications.
With its four high-speed USB ports, it is possible to connect this system to multiple devices and appliances, and with its large storage capacity, millions of music and photographs and software applications can be stored.
Further, with the power of ‘e-magine’ Broadband Internet by GT&T, and services from Republic Bank, it will be possible to manage on-line banking and have access to easy loans. Qualified borrowers will be able to own this system for as low as $2,800 per month.
Within another week, it is expected that Starr Computers will close a special deal with another strategic partner to allow for home-school training in Mathematics and English directly Online from the system. According to Mohan, more strategic partners are expected to come on board with Starr Computers to deliver more services to Guyanese.
Within another week, Starr Computers will be launching its ‘Starr Xfinity’ Business and Gaming models in Guyana.
As an immediate starter, Mohan said if the government would consider passing legislation for a credit deductable subsidy to the Guyanese taxpayers of $20,000 per household, this will bring the cost of the ‘Starr Xfinity’ system (Student Edition) down to $49,000 for 2010.
He said Starr Computers is ready to influence its network of resellers, contractor technicians, strategic partners and friendly competitors across Guyana, to form an independent alliance with government agencies in order to brainstorm ideas on improving the service.
According to him, the store’s team of A+ Certified Technicians is fully equipped and ready to produce an average of 50 Computers per day. With the extended team of sub-contractors, the store can triple its production within short notice, and, if demand increases, can embark into expansion and new job creation in Guyana.
Mohan also disclosed that Starr Computers is the distributor and Service Center of Lenovo Computers (formally IBM) in Guyana, and is having discussions with its international partners to launch low-priced Netbooks and Notebooks shortly.
Starr Computers are made in Guyana by Guyanese for over 20 years, and over this period, has continued to break the price barriers from $800,000 per computer to $69,000.
Starr Computers’ goal is to bring the price of computers down to under $40,000 before the end of 2011. “And we welcome the government’s initiative to extend help to the under-privileged Guyanese with a computer in every home,” he remarked.
