… ‘Powers’ recalled
GUYANA’S chances at the Digicel Caribbean Cup finals were dealt another low blow on the eve of departure as US-born midfielder Sean Cameron announced, yesterday, that he was joining Miami FC club mate JP Rodrigues in withdrawing from the national selection to contest the Caribbean’s premier football showpiece.
According to a reliable source no explanation was given for Cameron’s untimely withdrawal which has forced the coaching staff to recall former national forward Nigel ‘Powers’ Codrington, who exploded with 11 goals at the 2007 Digicel Cup Tournament – still the most by any player for a tournament. When contacted via the telephone coach Wayne Dover told Chronicle Sport that while the two players’ loss is great to the team the task at hand must be carried out, “We have to make do with what we have and get the result to take us through to the semis.
“Our confidence is up and we expect to do well. We are bubbling with guarded confidence,” Dover said.
The twelve locally based players and four officials depart for the French Colony of Martinique later today where they will be joined by the overseas-based players in Forte de France.
Along with the 30-year-old Codrington is Kester Jacobs who replaces JP Rodrigues and New Zealand-based Howard Newton who returns at the expense of Eusi Phillips.
Among the overseas-based players are the T&T trio of Charles Pollard, Shawn Beveney and Walter Moore, UK-based Chris Bourne and Jake Newton and Puerto Rico-based Chris Nurse.
Captain Howard Lowe leads the local-based players, inclusive of goalkeepers Ronson Williams and Derek Carter as well as Philbert Moffatt, Dwain Jacobs, Dwain Ali, Dwight Peters, Warren Gilkes, Anthony Abrams and Devon Millington.
The officials are: Manager Rawle Adams, Assistant Coach Collie Hercules, Physiotherapist Michelle Jackman and Head Coach Wayne Dover.
Guyana, who will be appearing in only their third Caribbean Cup finals, are set to take on Guadeloupe in their opener tomorrow and two days later challenge Antigua and Barbuda before ending the group play against Cup holders Jamaica on the December 1.
