Operations underway to avoid flooding on Essequibo Coast

Samaroo reports…
VICE-CHAIRMAN of Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam), Mr. Vishnu Samaroo  reported, yesterday, that the Regional Administration rushed two excavators mounted on a pontoon to clear the Lima sluice channel.
He said the waterway had been previously cleared of sling mid, washed in by the Atlantic Ocean, but became blocked again and the exercise underway will take about two days.

Addressing rangers and overseers at a meeting on drainage and irrigation (D&I), Samaroo said water flowing from the backlands flooded some low-lying areas at Lima.
However, he said the mobile pump is in full operation at the sluice to send excess rainfall water, originating from the backlands, into the Atlantic Ocean while the channel is being desilted.
Meanwhile, Samaroo assured residents that the mobile pump will continue to also drain rice fields, residential areas and farms in Lima, Coffee Grove and La Belle Alliance.
He said other pumps are operating at Charity and Cozier, Anna Regina, La Union and Devonshire Castle, as well, where rainfall is flooding front lands that are sown with paddy.
Speaking about places in the South of Essequibo Coast, Suddie, Golden Fleece, Aurora and Riverstown, Samaroo said sluices there are functioning effectively and the situation is much better.
But the D&I Department will continue to monitor the water level in canals, conservancies and lakes and address all related problems/issues facing farmers.
