– laments Chancellor Bourne
UNIVERSITY of Guyana (UG) Chancellor, Dr. Compton Bourne, has lamented that the institution is, currently, operating under a financial stringency that adversely affects its research facilities and compromises its ability to provide students with a high quality learning environment.
He said so at the 44th convocation, last Saturday, when some 1,400 students graduated with degrees, diplomas and certificates, in the presence also of proud parents, UG and government officials.
Making opening remarks, Bourne said UG’s financial situation not only limits its capital development but negatively affects its ability to offer staff compensation and research facilities sufficiently attractive for the recruitment and attention of high quality, academic and professional personnel.
He said the issue will fully engage his attention and that of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Lawrence Carrington and his management team in 2011.
Bourne said, with the help of experts, they will, in the new years, explore ways of strengthening UG’s finances on a sustainable basis.
The graduating class of 2010 assembled at University Square, Turkeyen Campus, Greater Georgetown, despite heavy rains that, at one stage, interrupted the proceedings.
Special awards were made to several graduates and the winner of the President’s was 22-year-old Michael George, who graduated from the Faculty of Natural Sciences.
The title of ‘Professor Emeritus’ was conferred upon Dr. Joycelynne Loncke, witnessed, too, by the Pro-Chancellor, Dr. Prem Misir; the Registrar, Mr. Vincent Alexander and Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Mr. Manniram Prashad.
The current number on roll at Turkeyen is in excess of 5,000 students, who are pursuing numerous undergraduate and post-graduate programmes.
