THE Government of Guyana has approved the re-establishment of the Embassy of the Argentine Republic in Georgetown. This approval follows a request by the Government of the Argentine Republic for the re-opening of its Mission here in Guyana, according to a release late last night from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Argentina had first established an Embassy in Georgetown in 1980, which was maintained until its closure in 1991.
“As Guyana continues to improve and strengthen its continental ties, the establishment of an Argentine Embassy in Guyana will augur well for relations between the two countries and also at the regional level,” the Guyanese foreign ministry stated.
“At the bilateral level, there would be the opportunity for forging links between the private sectors of both countries, as well as collaboration in the areas such as education and agriculture,” it added.
Both Guyana and Argentina are members of several regional and international groupings, including the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR), the Rio Group and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CALC).
“The CARICOM-Argentina Joint Commission on Consultation, Cooperation and Coordination remains the mechanism for CARICOM-Argentina cooperation at the regional level and the presence of an Argentine Embassy in Guyana, which is also home to the CARICOM Secretariat, would no doubt provide the opportunity for more fruitful collaboration under this mechanism,” the ministry stated.
Argentina, a member of the G20 group of countries, is the fourth South American country which will now have an Embassy in Guyana.
