…on 12 counts of causing death by dangerous driving
Lorry driver Chetram Moonsammy, charged with 12 counts of causing death by dangerous driving, was yesterday placed on $1.2M bail.
Moonsammy had been refused bail and remanded to prison by a magistrate in the New Amsterdam Court, Berbice, when he appeared there on November 2 in connection with the 12 persons killed when the lorry he was driving collided with a minibus
But he applied to the High Court for bail and was granted bail yesterday by Acting Chief Justice Mr. Ian Chang in the sum of $100,000 on each charge.
The application for bail was argued by Attorney-at-Law Ms. Kim Kyte-John.
The petition for bail with affidavit in support was made by Moonsammy’s reputed wife Radhica Persaud, 40.
In the petition the court was told that:
(a) The cases may not be tried until the year 2012
(b) The offences are bailable
(c) The said Chetram Moonsammy, is presumed to be innocent
Chetram Moonsammy has never been charged with any offence before. Chetram Moonsammy does not hold a current passport. He holds passport No. 0849121 which expired sometime ago.
At the moment, Moonsammy’s rice crop of 110 acres is almost ready for reaping and in his absence the entire crop would be lost, as he is unable to make any arrangement for the reaping and to hire labourers.
