Doctors battle to save 60-yr-old accident victim

DOCTORS at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) were yesterday battling to save the life of a 60-year-old woman, struck down by a canter motor vehicle on a pedestrian crossing on Camp Road, just off Queen’s College.
Gretnel Lewis, of 447 Cemetery Road, Mocha/Arcadia, East Bank Demerara, a former member of the Police Special Constabulary Department,  was picked up unconscious by volunteers from the nearby Red Cross Headquarters, who rushed her to the GPH.
She arrived at the Accident and Emergency Unit of the GPH in a critical condition, and was immediately referred to St. Joseph’s Mercy to have a CT-scan done. Her brother, Lennox Lewis, and his wife Avril, summoned by police and hospital officials, were advised by doctors at the GPH that she had suffered a fractured skull.
Relatives said that Lewis had retired from the Police Force about two weeks ago, after serving for approximately 15 years, and had gone to the police headquarters, Eve Leary, to look after her retirement benefits.
The woman’s relatives recalled that since retiring from the job, she had been trekking back and forth with the hope of having documentation finalized so she could begin receiving her benefits. However, on each  visit she was  told by the woman responsible for preparing her benefits, to ‘check back later’.
The driver of the vehicle was taken into police custody and is assisting them with investigations.
Ironically, the accident which comes quite early in the current National Road Safety Month, occurred just a few metres away from the Police Traffic Headquarters and the office of National Road Safety Council.
