Man stabbed to death in row over clothes

A man is in police custody following the stabbing to death of a long-time friend on Wednesday night at a shop in John Street, Lodge, where the friends met frequently. Police reported that they are investigating the murder of Carl Thomas, 55, of John Street, Lodge, Georgetown, which occurred about 18:40hrs on Wednesday.
Thomas and another man were involved in an argument over some clothes during which he was stabbed in his abdomen. He was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he died while receiving medical attention.
Brother of the deceased, Lear Porter, told the Guyana Chronicle yesterday that his sibling and the man, Renrick Fredericks, were in his shop as usual when a quarrel broke out over some clothes, in which one accused the other of throwing them away.
Mr. Porter added that he was standing in the shop at the time and was just about to move away when he heard persons in the shop saying “Don’t do that”. And then he saw his brother walking towards him, clutching his stomach.
Mr. Porter, who is the proprietor of King Lear’s Grocery and Variety Shop at 35 John Street, Lodge, said the stabbing occurred just by the gate.
He explained that his brother received a single stab wound which caused his intestines to protrude.
The father of four was picked up and rushed to the hospital where he succumbed.
Thomas is survived by two brothers and two sisters.
