IAC sees Ministry’s action as step in right direction
THE Indian Arrival Committee (IAC) said it has noted the findings of the recently released report on the Ministry of Human Services & Social Security’s investigation into the death of 16-year old, Neesa Gopaul. The IAC, while expecting more stringent actions, sees the findings and subsequent pronouncements as a step in the right direction in holding accountable those responsible for the protection of the nation’s children, a release said.
“It is clear that Neesa suffered tremendously. Her suffering was compounded by the lack of interest shown by some who were mandated by their jobs to continuously monitor her situation and provide unconditional support and protection.”
“The IAC feels that others, who may have contributed to Nessa’s prolonged suffering by ignoring her cries for help, have escaped sanctions. The IAC hopes that Neesa’s unfortunate and unnecessary death would install a sense of urgency and commitment into those tasked with nurturing and protecting tomorrow’s leaders,” the IAC stressed
The IAC said it also welcomes the Ministry’s initiative of implementing a Management Information System designed for the Child Care & Protection Agency and for the agency to be soon housed in its own building. While these resources will help to improve the services provided by the agency, the IAC feels that a more hands-on and coordinated approach is needed to prevent such horrific incidents from recurring.
“The IAC takes this opportunity to reiterate its calls for all organisations to be relentless in their efforts to rid the society of violence and abuse perpetrated on children and women and for all to be vigilant and report any such incidents. The IAC also reiterates that it is willing to work with any organisation and support any initiative aimed at preventing children and women folk from being preyed upon and abuse,” the release said.
